A Day in Devonport

The root structure on this old fig tree is amazing.

Wouldn't this make a great backdrop for quilt or garment photos

Looking over towards the Ports of Auckland

This tidal rock pool was built for soldiers rehabilitating after WW1

As a requirement for her Gold Duke of Edinburgh award, Miss B has to attend a two day first aid course in Devonport.  This suburb is on the North Shore of Auckland approximately an hour away from where we live.  Devonport is quite an old suburb (for NZ) with lots of beautiful old villas and homes.  It is also home to the New Zealand naval base, and has lots of historic buildings and points of interest.

Yesterday was the first day. Rather than drive back and forwards twice in a day, I spent the day in Devonport, walking, exploring, perusing the shops and reading in a park while listening to a folk music festival. Overall it was a lovely relaxing day.

I get to repeat the trip in a fortnight's time.  I wonder what I'll do then.

  1. Some wonderful sights captured Julie! I guess next week you could do the shops! Isn't there a quilt shop over there?

  2. that tree reminds me of the Mangrove trees in Key West Florida here in the states - the roots are huge and above ground like the one you show - it is always so interesting seeing all the sites from your country and others I find it fascinating.

  3. I've family who live there - love it, but what a nightmare the traffic is to get in and out.... some great cafes, beaches and just walking the streets looking at the villas is great. And the Evergreen (?) second hand bookshop is the BEST!

  7. Cushla's Patchwork/Quilting/fabric shop is always a must when you're in Devonport.
Even if you manage to keep you hands in your pockets and your money in your purse, it's always nice to just look and get inspiration.
Of course there are lots of other lovely shops and cafes as well. Enjoy your second visit.

  9. How fun, enjoy your second trip. :-) Has your weather cooled down?
We have warmed up. We are getting snow, we are close to breaking records with snowfall. And I thought we might not get much .. it fooled me. We are getting it later and we are getting lots! 2 feet and counting!
