Wednesday WIP

There has been a little sewing done in the past few days.
  • the backing and quilting have finally been done on Mr J's shirt quilt, (I have only had the top completed and waiting since August 2014) the binding has been attached and just needs to be hand stitched down now. Normally, I don't mind hand stitching, only the quilt is quite heavy and it so hot here, that is it not a pleasant experience.  With a completion date required by the end January, I must get it done  (This is my main  2015 Finish-a-long - Q1 project)
  • prepping a hand sewing project to take away - my first time doing English paper piecing, Apparently you can glue instead of basting the fabric to the templates - has anyone tried this, and would you recommend it?
  • another paper piecing project - so much for a break from it - these ballet slippers will be turned into a pillow. Pattern from Tartankiwi. Working towards making handmade gifts for my nieces, this is also a Q1 finish-a-long project
Linking up to WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced and 2015 Finish Along - Q1 at On the Windy Side.

  2. Those ballet shoes are great...and the star fabric. I've seen a lot of people glue with the sew line glue stick and they say it's great..wouldn't do it any other way and the papers come off easily. I still like tacking the papers though. :)

  3. Shirt quilt looking good. I can say yes to glue basting, I love English Paper Piecing and glue basting is awesome as well as that so is fusible, soluble and printable papers and Lynette Anderson's Appliquik tools! I did a tutorial last year if you do a search on my blog you find it.
Juliet's designs are awesome, your ballet shoes look lovely.

  4. Very very pretty ballet shoes...you must have a lot of patience doing all this paper piecing! I have used glue, the trick is to use it sparingly! But in all honesty, I much prefer to baste. I'm sure your Mr J will treasure his quilt, it's so special with all the memories of long ago shirts! Linda

  5. Yep I glue baste, it's easy peasy and nice and quick :) I've been wanting to sew that ballet shoe pattern for a while now to make a drawstring bag for my girls ... one day :)

  6. I glue -- my teacher taught me to do it that way and since she used to be a head teacher at technical college in the dressmaking/sewing department, I guess she knows what she's talking about. Love the ballet shoes! (visiting from Freshly Pieced: WiP Wednesday)

  8. The ballet slippers are divine! I can imagine any girl loving them, especially on a cushion of their very own. My shirt quilt top has probably been made for as long as yours, but I haven't got to the quilting or backing parts yet! It is on my list to be done! I look forward to seeing yours and all the other things you are doing! xx

  10. I love your shirt quilt, it's been hot here too so I sympathise about the heat. The ballet shoes are so sweet!! I baste my paper piecing by stitching only at the back, not through the paper. I do a holding stitch at each corner. Then when I need to remove the papers they just pop out. It's probably not as fast as gluing.

  17. I always blue baste with a Sewline glue stick. You can get them at quilt stores, but not spotlight. I wouldn't baste again!

  18. I just love your son's shirt quilt.
I plan to start mine this year too. I have two boys and have been saving shirts thorough out the childhood.

I guess I need to say, stay cool to you...and you need to say, stay warm to me. LOL We have -0 degree weather here. YUCK! And a nasty cold wind.

  20. Well done with your work - love the ballet shoes! Can't wait to see the EPP finished. :-) I made a queen bed quilt with hexagons over 20 years ago and basted each piece. It was laborious (?) but I didn't know any other way.

  22. Great projects Julie! I know what you mean about it being too hot to sit under a quilt to bind it at the moment! The shirt quilt does look lovely though. Good luck getting all your projects finished :-)
